……..Most well known in langkawi, Mahsuri Tomb………

a-langkawi-tombMahsuri was a beautiful young woman born in Langkawi of immigrants from Puckett late in the 18th century. She well-kown because her curse for the Langkawi. Mahsuri married a young man from her village, but after some time he went away on business (or to fight in a war) leaving Mahsuri home alone for a long time. At some point, a wandering minstrel (or storyteller) came along who captivated the whole village, including Mahsuri.

Having no place to stay, Mahsuri offered to allow the man to stay in her house. The village headman’s wife accused Mahsuri of adultery. Still smarting over her rejection, the headman condemned Mahsuri to death. Her veins supposedly spouted white blood — proof of her innocence — and she cursed the island to be barren for seven generations.

…….Gunung Mat Cincang – A Walk in the Clouds…….

fv20080629a1bThe legendary Gunung Mat Cincang, Langkawi’s second highest peak was believed to have been once a being named Mat Cincang who turned himself into a mountain. Fables aside, today the mountain rises in a spectacular skyline of crags that glow pink in the sunset and is part of the Mat Cincang Range which comprises of some of the oldest rock formations in Malaysia, dated about 2,400 million years old.

……..Burnt Rice of Padang Mat Sirat………..
beras-terbakar-1Expansionist designs of the invaders from the north had relegated Kampung Raja to ashes in 1821. The village rice granary was put to the torch in what was akin to ancient Langkawi’s scorched earth policy that was aimed at depriving the Siamese invaders of the grain. It was not long after this tragic episode that the Siamese attacked Langkawi, swiftly making their way to Kampung Raja to commandeer the rice stockpile. The invader’s ‘blitzkreig’ was to come to nought upon reaching the place as what was left was the smouldering mound of scorched rice.

So huge was the rice reserves at Kampung Raja that it took a long time for the fire to burn out. The remains of the scorched rice and Kampung Raja was soon buried under the ashes of time and the whole episode immortalised in the tragedy of Mahsuri.

………Langkawi Cabel Car……….

langkawi-cable-carsAlso located inside the Oriental Village, the clear bubble shaped cable car takes the 2.2km ride up the mountainside on a 42 degree incline. Gunung Mat Cincang at 708 metres offers a spectacular view. Starting from about sea level, the Cable Car rises from about sea level to an altitude of over 700 metres. Along the near vertical lift, tourists are presented with the towering cliff face named ‘Matahari Face’.

To fully appreciate the stunning views, a lot has to do with the prevailing weather conditions, so if it is overcast or raining, it may be best to wait for a clearer day. There are two viewing stations and it is possible to get off and rejoin the cable car at station one. A walking trek from Station one, uphill to Station two has been carved through the vegetation allowing a refreshing walk through the forest.
