Cameron Highlands:5 must-visit places

Cameron Highlands is a highland region located about 121 km east of Ipoh and about 214 km north of Kuala Lumpur, in Pahang, Malaysia. At 5,000 ft (1,500 m) above sea level it is the highest area on the mainland, enjoys a cool climate, with temperatures no higher than 25 °C and rarely falls below 12°C year-round.

Cameron Highlands has many places to visits. Here I ranked the top 5 must-visit places.

Green Tea Plantation

As the hallmark of fame, tea plantations are the main tourist attraction of Cameron Highlands. Tea plantations carpet the surrounding valleys in a fine layer of yellow green tea leaves, and most of them are open to tourists and visitors to purchase tea bags and watch the workers there plucking tea as well as enjoy a simmering hot cup of tea with scones. Tea was the reason why a British government surveyor, William Cameron saw potential and founded this valley, which eventually became Malaysia’s top highland holiday destination and Cameron Highlands was named after him.

Strawberry farm

Visit the strawberry park here will entail visitors not only to the opportunity to see how strawberries are cultivated but also offer the opportunity to purchase freshly picked strawberries with thick delicious fresh cream at affordable prices.

Cameron Highlands’s strawberries tend to be slightly smaller than those grown in Europe, probably due to a lack of long sunshine hours to promote growth, although they can be just as sweet and delicious. Always worth a visit for their strawberries and cream and other products such as strawberry shake and jam.

Waterfalls

1) Lata Iskandar

On the way from Tapah to the Cameron Highlands it is impossible to overlook the Iskandar Fall. Far before the fall is reached, the first parked cars and stalls appear.
The falls are visible from the road, and there is a big sign, welcoming the visitor to the Hutan Lipur Lata Iskandar. Souvenir shops, food stalls, don’t expect solitude here.

2)Parit Waterfalls

Parit Waterfalls and the trail leading there is really great for beginners in jungle trekking and those who just want a taste of light trekking while in Cameron itself! Its well-paved and easy on the feet. More like a walk in the park. The whole experience took us between 45 minutes to an hour. Also, entry to the Parit Waterfalls trail is so easily accessible, being just at the edge of Tanah Rata, the main town of Cameron.

3) Robinson Falls

The Robinson Falls are a series of magnificent water cascades down a steep hill slope in a forested area, located near Tanah Rata Town. To reach it, visitors need to follow the road that leads to the hospital from Tanah Rata. A quick turning to the left just before the uphill slope to the hospital will take you to the entrance of the jungle walk to Robinson Falls.

The jungle walks leads downstream to the main waterfall area, which can be reached in as little as 10 minutes. There is no proper swimming area, and the waterfall is only good for looking at and photography as you cannot head down to the shore due to the steep terrain. The waterfalls is also hopelessly polluted by drain water from farms, giving it a putrid stench.

Butterfly Farms

There are two butterfly farms in Camerons located next to each other. Depending on season, the farms can crawl with butterflies especially the magnificent Rajah Brooke.

The two places also have a collection of reptiles, insects and amphibians to show with shops selling ornamental plants and flowers.

Mount Batu Brinchang

Mount Batu Brinchang is the highest mountain in the Cameron Highlands area. It is situated at the Perak-Pahang border in Malaysia. It is one of the mountains in Malaysia where its summit can be reached by road. Due to easy accessibility, this mountain enjoys many visitors all year round.

Try  the nature trail path that cuts the forest all the way up to the summit. The nature trail’s entrance is situated at the edge of the Brinchang town itself.
